What is geocoding ? Geocoding is the ability to assign coordinates (lat/long) to points on a map. How is this useful for DX’ers ?
Well now if you want to know the lat/long of a place, go dont have to fire up google earth, it can now be done in Google Maps. Just search for the address or place name and there is a marker there with the lat/long.

Due to consistently poor wx and rig problems from the wx it looks as if TX5C will QRT as early as Friday. They have been really beaten up by tropical storms and high temps.

WE ARE OFFICIALLY OFF
News #22- 2008 Feb 26
Highlights:
… First LOTW credits for VP6DX contacts on ARRL server …
… Station and camp disassembly begins …
… One more record claimed …
Late yesterday, Feb 21, the Ducie Island expedition submitted over data for over seven thousand VP6DX contacts to the ARRL robot. These contacts were with over
900 stations whose owners made financial contributions of at least five US dollars to the expedition through Feb 24.
The submission has been accepted and processed by the robot, and these contacts are ready for matching by the donors.
Meanwhile, on Ducie Island, the operator team and crew of the Braveheart have begun the first phase of disassembly and off-loading. On today’s schedule to be
disassembled and removed from the island:
* All antennas for 20 through 6 meters at both east and west camps.
* The 30m antenna at the west camp, and the 40m 4-square at the east camp.
* Two operating positions and the shift supervisor workstation at the east camp.
* The technical workstation.
* A portion of the camp infrastructure for meals, cooking, washing, etc.
No on-air operating will occur during the daylight period today, as all hands are needed to complete the work of disassemble, packing, transfer to the ship,
and storage for the sea journey.
Tonight (beginning as early as Feb 27 Wednesday 0300z) a more limited on-air operation is possible, if the operators have time and energy remaining. Five
operating positions at two sites and transmit antennas for 160 through 30 meter bands will be available.
At Feb 27 Wednesday 1445z on-air operations will again shut down for a second day of deconstruction. At the end of Thursday local time the entire east camp
will have been removed from the island. The west camp, with single element verticals for 160, 80/30 and 40m, and possible one beverage (045) will remain,
along with three operating positions. This equipment will be staffed by a skeleton overnight crew, on-air from about Feb 28 Thursday 0330-1430z. Most
operators will sleep on the “Braveheart”, as there will be no camp facilities on the island.
Early Thursday morning (Ducie Island time), around 1400z, the ship’s crew and operators will return to the island to pack and remove all remaining antennas,
equipment, etc. The on-air phase of the Ducie Island expedition will end at that point.
This will be the last press release from Ducie Island. A log update was submitted to the website about one hour ago. A final log update, together with a
press release containing final statistics, will be transmitted from the Braveheart once we have departed.
WOW, hats off to Carsten and team, they are breaking records all over the place. Here is an excerpt from their latest bulletin…
As this message was transmitted by Iridium satellite from Ducie Island, the expedition contact total crossed 170,000 contacts… and continues to increase at about 415 contacts per hour. Most contacts now entering the logs are with European stations during their morning twilight period. In an hour or so the focus will shift to North and South America, east Asia and the Pacific, where it will remain until dawn at Ducie Island.
After 4-6 months from ZD9 Tom plans two weeks from each of the following: South Sandwich, South Orkneys and South Georgia
Looks like the team did the right thing and went QRT. Nothing heard since 0700Z/21st

According to the latest news reports coming out of the area, several riots are taking place , apparently they stormed the US Embassy and started 1 or more fires.

12 members of the Southeastern DX Club will be operating TI50DX (Tango India Five Zero Delta Xray) during the upcoming ARRL DX Phone contest..March 1,2. This activity is part of the celebration of the SEDXC’s 50th anniversary. QSL via N4NX. Look for the ops using their individual call signs prior to the contest.
3Y0E CARDS NOW BEING COUNTED FOR DXCC. IF YOUR CARD WAS DENIED CONTACT BILL MOORE
Basically, one of two things need to occur
1) Become a member of the United Nations
2) Receive a prefix bloc from the ITU
I don’t think it would be all that difficult to predict which of the two is most likely to happen.

Special Request for Europe

The propagation path between Ducie Island and UA1-3-4-6-9, UR, OH, SM and LA is very difficult… typically open for less than 1 hour each day.
On Feb 17 around our sunrise (Feb 17/1345-1445z) we successfully worked 80m CW and 75m SSB long path QSOs with OH and UA3/UA6. Signals peaked on the 195° beverage for most stations worked, with some stations equally strong on the 225° beverage. We hope to work more long path contacts with Scandinavia and western Russia during this time… and, with luck, perhaps a 160m long path QSO could occur. We will be listening!

Albanians flooded the Kosovocapital Pristina on Saturday, celebrating the territory’sindependence from Serbia a day ahead of schedule.
Cavalcades of cars circled with horns blaring as thousandspoured into the city waving the black and red Albanian flag.Fireworks lit up the night sky in a spontaneous celebrationless than 24 hours before the secession.
Kosovo’s parliament will declare independence on Sundayafternoon, almost nine years since NATO went to war to save theAlbanians from killings and ethnic cleansing by Serb forcestrying to crush a rebel insurgency.
It ends a long chapter in the bloody breakup of Yugoslavia.
As I wrote in a previous segment, it has now been released…
Kosovo Press Release # 1 February 16, 2008

Directly from Ducie Island:
ARRL DX CW contest starts soon. VP6DX will participate in a limited fashion:
* On the CW contest bands 160, 80, 40, 20 15 and 10, we probably will not be at
the “normal” frequencies. Operators will pick a frequency based on band
conditions. Each operator will make his own decisions about split vs simplex
operation, depending on the situation at the time.

Here are the first words from the island via Iridium:
Operations began Feb 11/0500z with a little “cooking session” to check out the
stations and available antennas. After several days of hard work, it was
relaxing to make some QSOs. With another big construction day ahead on Feb 12,
the cooking session ended at 11/0930z. The cooking session worked 1034 QSOs.
I was asked to help spread the word. We all love to gather DX News tidbits and some have very creative ways discerning the news.
People love gossiping; rising up excitement before things may happen. But such situations may lead to misunderstandings - and certainly - learning some wrong information. We just experienced another hoax that hits ZS8-preparations…
The team of 3Y0E has been alarmed today. Some unconfirmed news of unknown origin is hitting some dx bulletins with details of Petrus’ next activity from ZS8 - Marion Island.
Remembering recent problems caused by sharing unconfirmed news regarding 3Y0E activity, leading dx chasers to confusion, we would like to clarify that we cannot take any responsibility for any gossips and hoax news spreading across the world.
We suggest all dx news and bulletins publishers to verify any news regarding ongoing preparations and further arrangements of ZS8-activity received with us before publishing them to avoid sharing incorrect news again. Avoid hoaxes, please…
We would like to clarify that Petrus Kritzinger, ex 3Y0E, currently ZS6GCM/mm is set as team leader for a new scientific team going to Marion Island for 1 year.
The arrangements for his activity from ZS8 are in progress now. Currently we try to collect some equipment for Petrus to make his activity more complete, delivering another most wanted DXCC entity to you at high level. We would like to ask once more for being aware of publishing wrong news regarding this operation. A brand new, ZS8-dedicated site is under construction now. Its web address will be published soon and more news regarding any further activity of Petrus will be announced right there.

From the webmaster…I just had a telephone call with Carsten (DL6LAU) on Ducie Island. The reason we did not get any update or online log from the island is that they had no time until now because of a big workload to setup the stations and antennas. They plan to go “online” in the next 6-12 hours so we expect the first online logs around noon on Thursday. Please be aware that the data connection via Iridium is very sensible so it can last a long time to upload the online logs.
For the last several days I have noticed that a fellow Daily DX editor has been mysteriously missing, I wonder if he is en route to activate an upcoming DXCC entity ?
With all the news about Kosovo seeking independence I came across this web site.Which displays the map below and many links to the countries that will recognize them as a new country. As of this report it is about 44 of the 192 members of the United Nations will recognize Kosovo.

Last Friday we successfully arrived to Caleta Tortel after abt 450 km driving on gravel roads on very mountainous terrain. We boarded our boat Jorge Montt and left for Wager Island. Due to the bad weather conditions in the Messier Channel we had to stay overnight in a protected bay. We arrived to Wager Island on Saturday noon. We quickly set up the antennas at the tideline and the pileups started. At around 1800 the rain started too and was followed by gale force winds. The tents were deformed by the wind and even the ?all weather proof?tents could not resist the sheer pressure of water and soon we were all soaked. Food, clothes, everything. In the meantime our boat sought protection from the elements in a protected bay in Byron Island.
